Alif Loci: the 1st 19 years BE

THIS POST IS A WORK IN PROGRESS AND NOT FINISHED YET

Dear Readers:

The Baha'i calendar includes a 19-year cycle called Váhid and a 361-year cycle called Kull-i-Shay’ (http://bahai-library.com/bolhuis_kull_shay).  It makes sense to include these cycles in our loci.  Since I don't see different names for the Vahid in the Kull-i-Shay' I'm just going to use the same annual names in the Vahid for Vahid names in the Kull-i-Shay'.  They add up to the right numbers in arabic gematria anyway.

This is going to be a bare outline of my memorization web.  You can probably figure it out if you read the last couple of posts, but don't hesitate to ask questions in the comment box if you have any questions.

Plan for 10 Sections of Kitab-i-aqdas Loci

Dear Readers

The Kitab-i-aqdas has the same number of verses as 10 Metonic Cylces or 190 years.  Here is the Wikipedia quote on these cycles:

"In astronomy and calendar studies, the Metonic cycle or Enneadecaeteris (from Greek words for nineteen years) is a period of very close to 19 years which is remarkable for being very nearly a common multiple of the solar year and the synodic (lunar) month. The Greek astronomer Meton of Athens observed that a period of 19 years is almost exactly equal to 235 synodic months, and rounded to full days counts 6940 days. The difference between the two periods (of 19 years and 235 synodic months) is only a few hours, depending on the definition of the year."

Here is the names of the Vahid years in the Metonic cylce of Baha'i years from the Wikipedia article on the Baha'i calendar:
Years in a Váḥid
No. Persian Name Arabic Script English Translation
1 Alif ألف A
2 Bá’ باء B
3 Ab أب Father
4 Dál دﺍﻝ D
5 Báb باب Gate
6 Váv وﺍو V
7 Abad أبد Eternity
8 Jád جاد Generosity
9 Bahá' بهاء Splendour
10 Ḥubb حب Love
11 Bahháj بهاج Delightful
12 Javáb جواب Answer
13 Aḥad احد Single
14 Vahháb وﻫﺎب Bountiful
15 Vidád وداد Affection
16 Badí‘ بدیع Beginning
17 Bahí بهي Luminous
18 Abhá ابهى Most Luminous
19 Váḥid واحد Unity

It seems like it might make sense in light of these observations to divide memorization of the themes in the Kitab-i-aqdas, history, the periodic table of the elements, and the altitudes of the islands, into 10 sections corresponding to the names of the years.  Let's see how that works in the following posts.

The Sacred Number 79

Dear Readers,

I decided to jump ahead dramatically to test for meaningful correspondences between Gold (Element 79), Verse 79 of Kitab-i-aqdas, Year 79 of the Baha'i Era (1922), and the 79th highest altitude island in the world.  I am very happy with what I found.  Starting with Kitab-i-aqdas, this is what we read:

k79. We see you rejoicing in that which ye have amassed for others and shutting out yourselves from the worlds which naught except My guarded Tablet can reckon. The treasures ye have laid up have drawn you far away from your ultimate objective. This ill beseemeth you, could ye but understand it. Wash from your hearts all earthly defilements, and hasten to enter the Kingdom of your Lord, the Creator of earth and heaven, Who caused the world to tremble and all its peoples to wail, except them that have renounced all things and clung to that which the Hidden Tablet hath ordained.

What I ask us--in the mysteries of the fractal, interconnected universe in which we live--is this: could there be a hidden prophetic hint of the future in verse 79 of Kitab-i-aqdas telling us something about Gold and 1992, the 79th year of the Baha'i Era?

In 1921 German started suffering high inflation.  France and other countries were no longer accepting war reparations in German currency, and instead they started demanding reparations in foreign currency or in gold.  The German's struggled for about a year to comply which created increasing inflation for them as they tried to buy foreign currency, until by the middle of 1992 inflation exploded for them into hyperinflation until the price of goods where doubling every two days.  This was a major inducement along the path to World War II.  When I think about what Baha'u'llah wrote in Kitab-i-aqdas about greed taking people down a road they weren't intending to travel in piling up treasures, I am awed by the deep connection here to this most dramatic event in world history on the year that corresponds in history to this verse.  Think about it:

"The treasures ye have laid up have drawn you far away from your ultimate objective."

Where not the French and others shooting themselves in the foot by pushing the Germans so hard that extremist forces were empowered and the Nazi party strengthened leading the hole world straight into WWII?  I am amazed.  Is is a hidden prophesy?  I don't need to answer that question.  Just the correspondence between Gold, Verse 79, and world history are enough to held me remember the dates and numbers of all three of these things.  But what about the island with the 79th highest altitude?

That would be Sicily.  The interesting thing about Sicily is that it has one of the most active volcanoes in the world.  It was also described in reference to a golden wheel in classical Greek poetry when it was a part of Greece.

In the Wikipedia article on Sicily we find the following "mentioned in Iliad xviii:"
"At the moment Hephaestus was busily
Turning from bellows to bellows, sweating with toil
As he laboured to finish a score of three-legged tables
To stand around the sides of his firm-founded hall. On each
Of the legs he had put a gold wheel, that those magic tables
Might cause all to marvel by going with no other help
To the gathering of gods and by likewise returning to his house."
Mount Etna on Sicily spewing lava and ash all the time is also a good metaphor or parable for the quest for lots of gold and riches.  The soil around a volcano is rich for growing crops, but if you live to close to it and get to greedy clawing away at the slopes you are likely to be right in the line of fire for the next eruption.

I am happy to use Sicily as the memory locus for this important element, verse, and date in history.  Check back at the end of this article in the future for more details on how we will use the geography of Sicily to memorize verse 79 in Kitab-i-aqdas word by word.  For now I leave you with a famous painting in the public domain to center our imaginations on (Cole Thomas, Mount Aetna from Taormina, painted in 1844):

The Sacred Number 1

IN THE NAME OF HIM WHO IS THE SUPREME RULER OVER ALL THAT HATH BEEN AND ALL THAT IS TO BE
k1. The first duty prescribed by God for His servants is the recognition of Him Who is the Dayspring of His Revelation and the Fountain of His laws, Who representeth the Godhead in both the Kingdom of His Cause and the world of creation. Whoso achieveth this duty hath attained unto all good; and whoso is deprived thereof hath gone astray, though he be the author of every righteous deed. It behoveth every one who reacheth this most sublime station, this summit of transcendent glory, to observe every ordinance of Him Who is the Desire of the world. These twin duties are inseparable. Neither is acceptable without the other. Thus hath it been decreed by Him Who is the Source of Divine inspiration.

VI.5 The twin duties of recognition of the Manifestation and observance of His Laws, and their inseparability

-------------------
Dear Readers:

Don't you feel as I do that this line "this summit of transcendent glory" is a beautiful way to start off our meditation of the world's first and highest island peak?

Now before moving one to our memorization work, I must make some Biblical connections as the story of a dear friend presses upon my heart as I read these words.  A dear Baha'i brother told me that he was once talking with a woman about the Baha'i faith who had asked to receive a visit to learn more, but when he visited her, she said to him, "I'm not interested in hearing more about the Baha'i faith anymore because I've learned it's a works based religion and not a faith based one."

Prophet Samuel and Apostle James, please help us out here.  Without further ado, let's hear what these two pillars of righteous civilization have to say in the Bible:

1 Samuel 15:22-23 (NIV)
(22) ...Samuel replied:
“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
(23) For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
he has rejected you...

And this is not just an "OLD TESTAMENT" principle for the Jews but one for Christians as well, for it is written in the book of James as follows:

James 2:18-26 (KJV)
(18) Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
(19) Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
(20) But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
(21) Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
(22) Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
(23) And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
(24) Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
(25) Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
(26) For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Here is a great Christian song that makes a great point about this (Screen Door by Rich Mullins):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcvBsNcIzu4

So, that is the theological point for the intellect, but there is a heart appeal to the Christians as well that we ought to embrace the imperative that faith be accompanied by works, or that we both BELIEVE and OBEY as Baha'u'llah writes in the first verse of Kitab-i-aqdas.  And this is the heart appeal, the appeal of David.  We can ask those who want to have faith without works, don't you want to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of living as David, "that man after God's own heart," wanted to see it?  Don't you really want to see His will be done and His kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven as Jesus taught us to also pray?

To the heart of Christians I appeal, read David's Psalms 27 and then Baha'u'llah's Fire Tablet.  Then ask your heart, how can you not want to do good works if you really believe in and love your Creator God?

The Bible says by two or three witnesses we will know the true testimony.  Samuel, James and David testify to me that the first verse of Kitab-i-aqdas is TRUTH.  That said, let us revel in the mystery of it being the first verse.

What does it mean that it is the first?  What other firsts are so fundamental.  I would like to explore three other firsts.  The Word of the Spirit is like the Wind, the Elements in Nature are born of the Fire of Stars, Time flows like a river of Water, and Mountain Peaks are the greatest upward thrusts of earth--thus we weave together a kind of Fire, Air, Water, and Earth in these associations.

FIRE TO SPIRIT: HYDROGEN

Nothing is more fundamentally the number 1 in all of nature other than the element hydrogen.  Hydrogen is the fuel of the brightest starts.  This line, "the recognition of Him Who is the Dayspring of His Revelation," speaks of the dawn when we experience the coming of the light of burning hydrogen from our sun.  It resonates as a natural association.

WATER TO SPIRIT: BE 1

"The Baha'i calendar started on March 21, 1844. That first year was denoted 1 BE (Baha'i Era). 1844 was the year that the Bab first announced his revelation and the year that Baha'u'llah joined the Babi movement." (http://altreligion.about.com/od/holidaysfestivalsevents/p/bahai_calendar.htm"

In year 1 of the Baha'i Era, the Bab declared his station and Baha'u'llah recognized the Bab.  Thus, verse one is also a meaningful reflection of this year of Baha'i history in so much as it speaks of Baha'u'llah in the sentence of this verse that states: "Whoso achieveth this duty [of recognizing the Bab in that year] hath attained unto all good."

LAND TO SPIRIT:  PUNCAK JAYA

I struggled over whether I should use mount Everest or Puncak Jaya as our first peak.  As I explained in my last post, there is a special parable of unity in the nature of island, hence I preferred to use only island peaks for memory loci upon which to associate the sacred verses of Kitab-i-aqdas.  However, when I say the word summit in the first verse it was almost too good to be true for this exploration of mysteries.  Maybe, I asked myself, the path might be better explored in mysterious connections starting with the world's highest summit at Everest.  But then I studied the name of the highest island peak more carefully, and this is what I found on Wikipedia: "Puncak means peak or mountain and Jaya means 'victory', 'victorious' or 'glorious'."  So it means the Glorious Peak.  And in the first verse of Kitab-i-aqdas, this is what we read:

"...this summit of transcendent glory..."

Praise be to God is all I can say.  This first first gives me the chills in how well it associates to hydrogen, Baha'i history, and the highest island peak all through the sacred number 1 present in all four of these phenomena.

Here is a picture of Puncak Jaya from Alfindra Primaldhi on Wikicommons:

Here also is an area map from Sémhur on Wikicommons also:

This mountain is the highest in New Guinea apparently, and this is the altitude information for the whole island from the Swiss UN website I mentioned in the last post:

5030 m New Guinea (Indonesia/Papua New Guinea) 785753.0 sq.km.

Wikipedia's numbers are a little different and it says the following:

At 4,884 metres (16,024 ft) above sea level, Puncak Jaya is the highest mountain in Indonesia, the highest on the island of New Guinea (which comprises the Indonesian West Papua region plus Papua New Guinea), the highest of Oceania (Australian continent), and the 5th highest mountain in political Southeast Asia. It is also the highest point between the Himalayas and the Andes, and the highest island peak in the world. Some sources claim Mount Wilhelm, 4,509 m (14,793 ft), as the highest mountain peak in Oceania, on account of Indonesia being part of Asia (Southeast Asia).

Check back at the bottom of this post later for a full memorization tool of every word in this verse both in Arabic and in English when I get around to it.  I imagine I will use more of New Guinea around this mountain in some meaningful manner to create sub-loci to lock in on every word of the verse.  For now though I want to get broad brush stroke understanding of the whole text.

The Baha'i Era Dates and Island Peaks

Dear Readers:

In the Baha'i faith, we believe in progressive revelation.  God sends a Great Messenger or Manifestation of Himself from time to time who infuses the world with new spiritual nutrients (Such as Zoroaster, Krishna, Buddha, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, or Baha'u'llah).  Over time, these nutrients are broken down an digested by civilization until it is time for God to send a new messenger with a new message.  This is a lot like the process of mountain formation and erosion in nature.  An earthquake or volcano creates a fresh new high altitude peak.  This peak is rich in minerals for life, but it must be worn down over time to fertilize the soil around it.  Eventually, if no new mountains form, the soil is depleted of nutrients as they are eventually washed out to sea.

Also in the Baha'i faith, we believe in the oneness of all humanity on earth.  Island peoples have long symbolized the need for oneness and harmony within an ecosystem.  The Japanese for example (according to Jared Diamond in his book Collapse) were once one of the greatest examples in history of a self-contained society in homeostasis and harmony within the natural environment of their islands before they opened their borders to trade with the European colonial world.  Still though, to this day, many island people around the world cherish sound environmental stewardship and internal peace and cooperation.  The Baha'i faith believes that it is time for all of humanity to evolve culturally in this direction, seeing the whole world as one great island upon which we must all time in balance with our environment and in harmony with one another.

Synthesizing these two great parables in nature--the parable of the mountain peaks nourishing the land as they wear down and the parable of the early manifestations of social unity and harmony within the environment on islands--it appears overwhelmingly appropriate to associate years in the Baha'i Era (our calendar system beginning with year 1 in 1844 AD) and verses in the sacred text of the Most Holy Book of the Baha'i faith, the Kitab-i-aqdas, with the island peaks of the world, starting at the highest peak and working down from there.

While I'm at it, I will also explore the periodic table of the elements in order as well.  I anticipate some interesting parables will revel themselves about the truth of this ordering of verses and dates and location as they are overlaid with the elements.  When we get beyond the basic periodic table we can explore larger compounds (perhaps inorganic ones) that sum up the number of protons needed to match higher numbers than we have elements for.  I look forward to seeing where mysterious coincidences of correspondence take us in our musings.

Islands by Altitude

Now this is a fun way of organizing islands, from top to bottom:

The domain .ch is for Switzerland (The Helvetic Confederation).  I trust the Swiss to be accurate with their lists.  However, to get more information in the reverse order (from highest to lowest) that I want it in, we can go to wikipedia after verifying from the list below:
